The story

The Sellaronda Skimarathon was born from the idea of a sports’ enthusiast, a volcanic organiser as well as being deeply in love with his Val di Fassa and Ladin land, Diego Perathoner, who chose to combine an outdoor activity such as ski mountaineering to the most important ski carousel of the Dolomites, adding among the ingredients,  the night challenge with the use of headlamps. A unique event of its kind, along an itinerary which is 42km long and has 2.700 metres of vertical height gain, and runs through the four most important villages of the four Ladin valleys, as well as the Sella, Gardena , Campolongo and Pordoi mountain passes along a continuous up and down itinerary, following ski-mountaineering’s formula par excellence: and that is racing in couples, respecting the spirit of a roped team and the respect for the mountains. The first editions date back to 1995 and it was an instant success, with the triumph of the partnership consisting of Fabio Meraldi and Enrico Pedrini in the men’s race, and of Bruna Fanetti and Valentina Cenini in the female race. From that day onwards a succession of lucky editions were carried out, with increasing numbers of participants until it reached more than 550 couples in the past few years, the maximum number allowed for safety reasons. Once in a life time all those who love ski-mountaineering should wear the Sellaronda Skimarathon bib.

In December 2009 fate took Diego Perathoner away, on one evening that saw him once again in the front row to help others, looking for lost ski mountaineers in Val Lasties.

Fabio Meraldi (the recordman who has won 6 editions) and Enrico Pedrini won also in 1996 and in other three editions and among the athletes who won more than once we also find  Guido Giacomelli, Hansjoerg Lunger, Orietta Calliari, Roberta Secco, Michele Boscacci, Lorenzo Holzknecht, Alba De Silvestro, Elena Nicolini, Francesca Martinelli, Annemarie Gross, Martina Valmassoi and Alba De Silvestro, as well as Matteo Eydallin.

The times to beat at the Sellaronda Skimarathon are those of Filippo Barazzuol and William Boffelli, who in 2019 clocked 2h56’39”, and of Laetitia Roux and Martina Valmassoi, who in the same year, with speedy snow, finished the race in 3h3’37”.
During the last March edition, which took place along a reduced distance of 40km due to the heavy snowfall, the winners were Davide Magnini and Matteo Eydallin with the time of 2h52’59”, while in the female race success went to Alba De Silvestro and Elena Nicolini, the girls stopped the stopwatch at 3h29’36”.
