The Sellaronda Skimarathon presented at Rifugio Salei

The registration has been a sell out with 1.100 athletes from 20 countries

A high altitude presentation for the 30th edition of the “Sellaronda Skimarathon”. The organisers of the prestigious ski mountaineering race have chosen rifugio Salei at Passo Sella, to announce the official 2024 news, right where the first transition area will take place on race day, on Friday 22 March. A special location for the Salei mountain hut, a stunning landscape surrounds it, with Val Lasties in the background. This is where the creator of the event, Diego Perathoner, lost his life together with his other three mountain rescue partners under an avalanche, while searching for lost mountaineers. Diego, was remembered with a long applause by the people present during the press conference, from the president of the Organizing Committee Oswald Santin, together with the secretary general Daniela Perathoner, to the mayor of Canazei Giovanni Bernard, to the president of the international jury Omar Oprandi, and the director of ‘Val di Fassa Grand Eventi’, Cristoforo Debertol, to the Dynafit sport marketing specialist Daniel Luziani.

«We sold out a week early – the president of the Organizing Committee Oswald Santin pointed out- From when I have taken over Diego’s role of managing the event I have tried to increase the presence of foreign athletes and we have managed to do so together with all of the staff and I am very proud of this achievement. I like to remind everyone that we have gone from 300 couples in the race to a maximum of 650 teams, now stabilized with 550 team after covid. A clear sign of Sellaronda Skimarathon’s irresistible attraction.”

Even Daniela Perathoner, the secretary general, made a significant speech: “The strength of Sellaronda is the spirit of the participants and the over 450 volunteers spread out along the itinerary. Last year, under a terrible storm and heavy snowfall, the joy of the athletes when they ended their exertion was significant. The important message is that the main thing is to be there, and above all the cross the finish line.”

Luca Mangger, from team Dynafit, partner of the event, also took part at the meeting: “I am ready for the race and hope to compete at a high level. To reach the top ten would be great for me. I am training hard these days on flat paths along forestry roads because the Sellaronda reaches a total of 42km in length and that is a lot to manage physically”.

The mayor of Canazei Giovanni Bernard gave his heartfelt thanks to the committee: “I want to emphasise the close connection between the four Ladin valleys, highlighted by this event, which runs across the town centres, along the slopes and valleys and mountain passes which all characterize our land. A big thank you to all the volunteers who make themselves available for the perfect success and above all to the Perathoner family, led by Oswald and Daniela, who carry on this masterpiece which was born thirty years ago by the volcanic Diego.”

Sellaronda Skimarathon which once again, this year, is sold out, thanks to the presence of 535 teams, for a total of over 1000 participants, representing 20 countries. The number of women registered is noteworthy, 145 in total, 30 female teams, which have  guaranteed a place on the starting line, as well as the 85 mixed teams, which are made up by a male athlete and a female athlete competing together.

Quantity, but also quality in the list of participants, which includes many big names, to which others will be surely added. In particular, in the last few hours, the unusual duo Michele Boscacci and Davide Magnini, representing the Centro Sportivo Esercito have joined the list. The athlete from Albosaggia in Valtellina has already imposed himself in the 2022 edition together with Matteo Eydallin and on two other occasions paired up with Lorenzo Holzknecht, and that is in 2015 and 2012, while the athlete from Vermiglio in Trentino has stepped on the highest step of the podium last year under a heavy snowfall together with the long distance expert Eydallin. On the men’s side the Austrian national team has guaranteed its presence, with Jakob Herrmann, Christian Hoffmann and the rising star Paul Verbnjak (born in 2001), without forgetting Daniel Ganhal, Nils Oberauer and Julian Tritscher. Among the Italian national team the athlete from Val Gardena Alex Oberbacher will take part, but in the next few days other athletes from the Italian national team are expected to join, despite some other important events.

In the women’s race, we have the presence of the Austrians Sarah Dreier and Johanna Hiemer, who are currently experiencing a great moment of form and have recently finished first and second in the Vertical World Cup race held in Schladming. The two girls who won the place of honour in 2023 at the Sellaronda Skimarathon will try to write their name on the event’s roll of honour.

The athletes (start at 6pm in Canazei) will have to tackle the following ascents in sequence, firstly towards Passo Sella, then Gardena, Campolongo and finally Pordoi, and will compete on the original itinerary which is 42 kilometres long with 2.700 metres of vertical height gain. The athletes will pass through the centre of the towns of Selva Val Gardena, Corvara, Arabba and Canazei. The event will be streamed live, starting from 7.15 pm on the event’s official website.
