Sellaronda, where are you going?
31 december 2014
Twenty years pass quickly, many things have changed since Sellaronda Skimarathon’s first edition was held in 1995 and won by two of the legends of international ski-mountaineering, Fabio Meraldi and Chicco Pedrini. Twenty editions of such an important event as the Sellaronda represents a lifetime, or better still, represents what can be considered to be the history of modern, competitive ski-mountaineering.
There is the whole evolution of a discipline which has grown exponentially in this 42 kilometres long competition which runs round the Sella Massif: there are the stories of thousands of Sellaronda competitors who have exerted themselves along the four passes, Sella, Gardena, Campolongo and Pordoi. In these twenty years of history there is an Organizing Committee which has had to re-organize itself after the death of Diego Perathoner, a compact group of people which took over an important heritage transforming and following the pace of ski mountaineering’s evolution.

Maybe since those first editions some of the romanticism of departing towards the unknown has been lost, in those days the competitors considered the boundaries of their personal limits could be compared to the columns of Hercules,

everyone had heard of them but very few had reached them.
What has instead been achieved in these years is the meticulous search for perfection, human driving force and the tools to beat time leave little space for improvising.

Training, nutrition, clothing and gear have the fine tuning of a Formula 1 car. With a bit of nostalgia and smiling fondly at photos of the first edition, of race suits borrowed from nordic skiing and heavy equipment which would never be used nowadays. With the same courage of the first pioneers, we now look ahead, towards the dream to make this Skimarathon grow even bigger with technological projects which after the first trials are going full blast and a twinning with Saalbach’s Mountain Attack says a lot for the future of these competitions.

The most important winter sport competitions, from the historical ski jumping competition “Trofeo dei 4 trampolini”, to the more recent cross country skiing “Tour de Ski”, have joined up to give added value to each discipline. Maybe even in night ski-mountaineering competitions an international circuit will develop including all the most important competitions. If that happens another step forward towards the future will have been taken.
